Omosako Grow Out - Open Sale Event (part 2)

Following on from my previous article looking at what makes the Omosako Shiro Utsuri bloodline so special I’m now going to delve into some advice on how to select tosai for the future.

The advice offered here should be used as a guide as there are so many variables that can effect the development of Koi along their journey to adulthood. The environment they live in and the raising techniques that you implement play a massive part and if you get it wrong even the most promising young Koi can be ruined. This information is targeted at some the traits of Omosako Shiro Utsuri but much will also ap...

Flash Back Friday - Spawning in Japan

The spawning season has been underway in Japan for a while now with some breeders already starting on their second crop production. With that in mind todays flash back Friday takes me back to 2009.

It was the third summer that I had been in Japan for work experience and on this occasion I had the chance to witness spawning for the first time. Up in the mountains of Yomogihira at Marusho Koi Farm several different sets of oyagoi were put together after a busy morning preparing all of the nets.

Flash Back Friday - Sakai "Zig-Zag" Kohaku

On Flash Back Friday, we will be looking back at our history, trips to Japan and some memorable koi that we have supplied.

Due to our relationships, knowledge and contacts in Japan, we can offer way more than just the standard stock fish, we can open up doors to some very special koi indeed. One such door was Sakai Fish Farm which, led us to this stunning Kohaku which we sourced as nisai for a UK dealer.

The video shows the Koi a year later in 2016 as sansai and she still resides at the farm today now close to 80cm.

A Very Special Goshiki

As a dedicated wholesaler the main aim of our job is to work in the background supporting the retailers that we supply. Our reward comes from seeing their companies succeed and knowing that we helped achieve that success with the Koi that we supplied and knowledge that we shared.

Over the years we have sourced and supplied countless numbers of top level Koi directly from Japan or via our facility in the UK but very rarely are we able to disclose them publicly. Today however we are able to share with you a fish that was recently supplied to a customer of ours that is a truly special Koi in the ...

Something Different from Marudo

I’m always on the lookout for something new and interesting, for me it keeps things fresh just the same as it does for the breeders producing them year in year out.

It’s becoming common place in Japan that the bigger breeders have varieties they produce as a hobby. For example, Omosako the world renowned Shiro Utsuri specialist produces Goshiki and Kujaku, Choguro who specialises in Purachina breeds Beni Kikokuryu and Goshiki to satisfy his own interests.

One breeder which ended up taking their interest to a whole new level was Marudo Koi Farm. One of the best Gosanke breeders in the world beg...
